GiG powering new brand Crab Sports’ online sports betting launch in Maryland

Gaming Innovation Group’s (GiG) sportsbook platform is now live in the US State of Maryland following the launch of its partner Crab Sports. Earlier this week, Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission (MLGCC) issued a sports betting license to the brand, making the start of its operations possible.

GiG notes that Crab Sports is uniquely positioned as a local brand backed by Marylanders and tailored towards “state-specific sporting interests.” Crab Sports will look to leverage GiG’s “strong understanding of the regional market,” alongside the tech company’s established presence in the US-regulated scene and extensive experience in launching new brands, to gain an early footing.

Crab Sport’s launch came after the sportsbook completed a controlled demonstration of its online sports wagering platform on July 10th. The platform, which is accessible at crabsports.com, enabled customers to participate in live wagering while MLGCC staff ensured compliance with all necessary procedures and the proper functioning of the systems, Southern Maryland Chronicle reported.

Marcel Elfersy, CCO of GiG, said: “It’s great to be launching with a localized brand like Crab Sports, sharing their vision that Maryland, and indeed the wider US market, can benefit from the opportunities of a strong partnership between operator and provider, building a unique and personalized customer experience that is tailored for local interests.

This differentiation, we believe, can help our partners compete with the other leading online operators and capitalize on what is a burgeoning marketplace.”

Derek Baker of Crab Sports added: “We are incredibly excited to be launching Crab Sports in Maryland alongside the GiG team. Together, we have accomplished a tremendous amount to reach this milestone and we’re delighted that our partnership has delivered a product to help us compete with the best in the market.”

We are looking forward to demonstrating the power of our localized approach and our shared bright future ahead.”

Crab Sports has now become the 11th mobile sportsbook licensee to launch in Maryland, joining Barstool, Betfred, BetMGM, BetRivers, Caesars, DraftKings, Fanatics, FanDuel, PointsBet, and SuperBook. Maryland has also launched ten retail sports wagering facilities, in a bid to expand opportunities for sports enthusiasts to engage in legal betting.

Having opened its doors to licensed operators in November 2022, legal online sports betting in Maryland has generated over $328 million in gross gaming revenue in its first seven months up to May 2023.
